First 2GB, then 3GB and now 4GB! Yes, we are talking about RAM in smartphones, and genuinely the question arises what next. It seems that with each passing year a new standard is set to achieve in smartphone RAM. Literally, mobile market is swelling with phones having RAM more than ever. Surprisingly while on the one hand iPhone is unfazed by all this brouhaha over RAM and using still 2GB, on the other hand Android makers, to rope in more and more buyers and in keeping with the trend, are equipping their smartphones with unprecedentedly high RAM. Once there was a time when Galaxy Note 3 was the only mobile phone to have 3GB RAM and to be honest at the time this much of RAM was considered a little redundant. Then came a time when 3GB RAM phones were no longer a rarity. Everybody was awestruck when Asus made a splash with its 4GB RAM phone. Asus 4GB phone, that is Asus Zenfone 2 was an overnight success and sold like hotcakes. Soon other companies, especially the Chinese mobile makers, followed the suit and the current scenario is that almost every high-end tagged mobile has now 4GB RAM.

But this race to more and more RAM has apparently no end as the mobile companies, after all, have to do something to stay ahead of the game and lure the customers. The China-based company Vivo was the first to usher in the age of 6GB RAM mobile phones and as expected pulled in the feature-obsessed buyers. The first 6GB RAM phone, Vivo Xplay5 Elite, was launched in March 2016. Just imagine how splendid a phone should perform, which is not only equipped with 6GB RAM but also contains the most advanced SoC Snapdragon 820. In a nutshell, 6GB RAM phones at present have everything one can ask for, not to mention heavy gaming and heavy multi-tasking.

So let’s have a look at the 6GB smartphones that have been launched so far:

Asus Zenfone 3 Deluxe

Asus is the first company that had implemented 4GB RAM in its flagship device, Zenfone 2 and garnered remarkable publicity doing so. Later on other manufacturers followed the suite. And this time too, Asus is very quick in launching its first 6GB RAM phone. Asus Zenfone 3 Deluxe is all set to launch in June 2016 and it will be available by the end of the month.

Like other 6GB RAM phones, it will also ship with Snapdragon 820 SoC, the most efficient SoC to the date. Also it will be selling 3 different internal memory variants 64,128 and 256GB.

Asus Zenfone 3 deluxe comes with hybrid SIM card/microSD card slot. You can install a memory card of up to 256GB in this slot. One more thing that is notable is that this device has two versions of RAM; 4GB and 6GB.

As far as design is concerned, OnePlus  follows the suite of other Chinese makers that are master in copying design from popular brands. Look at its back panel and you will find it highly inspired by HTC phones rear.

OnePlus 3 has installed fingerprint scanner on front face at home button. Being one of the favorite brand for those who love affordable and quality Chinese phones, there will be a sure head-to-head between LeEco, Vivo, Lenovo and other brands throwing upcoming phones with 6GB RAM.

Lenovo Zuk Z2 Pro

Lenovo Zuk 2 Pro is another 6GB RAM phone. It too comes in two variants: one 4GB and another 6GB. Zuk 2 Pro uses the  Snapdragon 820 CPU, with the Adreno 530 GPU. It boasts a 5.2-inch, Full HD Super AMOLED display.

Lenovo Zuk 2 Pro lets us take images of high clarity and resolution with a 13MP  primary camera and a front camera of 8MP.  Talking about the design, Zuk 2 Pro is wrapped inside a highly ergonomic and elegant looking body. As it is trending, its screen is slightly curved at edges making it a 2.5D curved. Unlike other Lenovo phones which are equipped with a fingerprint scanner, this device sports a sensor on top of home button.

For reasons unknown, unfortunately like other 6GB RAM phones mentioned above, Zuk Z2 Pro also lacks an expandable memory slot. Its 6GB variant comes with 128GB internal memory that is high enough to store large videos, games and a good number of HD images.

This mind bubbling device is available in China for pre-order at CNY 2699 ($400 approx.) and may soon be available in other countries also. Rumor has it: Other 6GB RAM phones expected to be announced soon

  • Samsung Note 6 (not yet announced)
  • Huawei Mate 9 (not yet announced)
  • Xiaomi Mi Note 2 (not yet announced)
  • OnePlus 3 (not yet announced)

As is clear from the above, we can see that there are only three 6GB RAM mobile phones announced so far and their availability on the market is also not even. But it doesn’t take a rocket-scientist to figure out that soon the smartphone market is going to be flooded with 6GB RAM phones. First 2GB, then 3GB, then 4GB and now 6GB, what is next, what the future has in store: 8GB, 16 GB and so on, perhaps only time will tell. Before we conclude, one question still needs to be answered, though: When Apple is doing well with a 2GB RAM in its iPhone, why Android phone makers are engaged in this never-ending competition to equip their phones with more and more RAM and more-than-ever powerful CPU? Maybe we already have an answer: As far as the software optimization and a better performance while using a light hardware are concerned, Android still has miles to go before it is on par with iOS. That said, who cares about iPhone, as long as you can get omnipotent smartphones at this price.
